Mexico Bans GMO Corn and the Controversial Herbicide Glyphosate (Roundup®)

A recent article in mexicodailynews.com on January 4, 2021, titled “AMLO announces GMO corn ban farm lobby critical, organic growers call it a victory,” announced that the federal government of Mexico has decreed a ban on genetically modified corn. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. The goals for creating GMO crops usually include increased yield and pest resistance, or resistance to specific herbicides.

“The government published a decree Thursday that stated that biosecurity authorities would ‘revoke and refrain from granting permits for the release of genetically modified corn seeds into the environment.’

The objective of the decision is to ‘contribute to food security and sovereignty’ and protect ‘native corn, cornfields, bio-cultural wealth, farming communities, gastronomic heritage and the health of Mexicans,’ the decree said.

The decree also calls for the elimination of glyphosates, the controversial herbicide sold under the tradename Roundup® by January, 2024.
